How do I access mental health support and navigate the system?

Speaking to someone about how you are feeling can be a little daunting.  Here are some commonly asked questions to help you understand how to access support from counsellors and psychologists.  Our Youth Workers are also available to answer any questions, or guide you through the process.

  • Psychologists
  • Counsellors
  • Social workers
  • Psychiatrists

What is a mental health treatment plan?

  • A mental health treatment plan is a referral from your GP for a mental health professional.
  • It allows you to claim up to 10 sessions through Medicare. 
  • For those impacted by COVID-19, you may be eligible to claim up to 20 sessions.
  • Sometimes there may be gap payment, whilst other mental health professionals bulk bill.  This means there will be no out-of-pocket cost.

How do I get a mental health treatment plan?

  • Book a double appointment with your GP.
  • Explain to your GP what’s been going on.
  • They may ask you some personal questions to understand your situation.
  • Keep in mind, your GP will keep this information confidential.
  • They will give you the mental health treatment plan—this a referral to a mental health professional.
  • Your GP may be able to recommend a mental health professional, otherwise feel free to ask us at MYS or find one yourself.

What do I need to ask when booking an appointment with a mental health professional?

  • Do you have anyone that has experience working with young people?
  • I have a mental health treatment plan.  What is the out of pocket cost?  Or do you bulk bill?
  • How long is the wait list before I can get an appointment?
  • Do you have a telehealth option (over the phone or video call)?
  • Can I email a photo of my mental health treatment plan to you if I’m doing telehealth?
