This training is developed and delivered by disabled young people from the Youth Disability Advocacy Service (YDAS).

Hosted by Monash Youth Services (MYS) you will learn valuable skills to create inclusive and accessible events and activities for young people with a disability.

Am I eligible?

  • Are you aged 12 – 25?
  • Do you live work or play in the City of Monash?

When are the sessions?

  • Session 1 – Tuesday May 31st (5pm – 7pm) AND*
  • Session 2 – Tuesday June 7th (5pm – 7pm)

*Please note that you need to attend both sessions and will receive a certificate of completion.

Where will the sessions be?

Both sessions will be delivered on the Zoom platform.  You will be emailed a Zoom link closer to the day.

What is the cost?

This training is free for all participants.

What will I cover in the training?

  • Introduction to YDAS and the disability rights movement as context for the training
  • Assumptions about disabled young people and why they are damaging
  • How to ask questions to disabled young people
  • Language (identity first vs. person first and other forms of language ie. microaggressions)
  • Models of disability aka ways to understand disability, including;
    • Charity model
    • Medical model
    • Social model
    • Human rights model
  • How to plan, promote, deliver and review accessible and inclusive events/programs/activities/meetings. We go over each step, and in-dept explore the practical skills of;
    • Statements of commitment to access and inclusion
    • Access Keys (go through and facilitate participants starting to write one)
    • Access and Inclusion Action Plans (go through and facilitate participants starting to write one)
